Novah / Keep the boards feeling good

How to clean laminate flooring. Dry first, damp when needed.

Laminate can look wonderfully like wood. That does not mean it wants wood oil, a bucket bath or a polishing session. The everyday route is simpler: collect grit, deal with a spill and use a lightly damp wipe only where the floor's instructions allow it.

Dry cleaning first. A light damp wipe for remaining dirt.

Confirm the floor is laminate and find its care instructions. Vacuum with a suitable soft head or use a dry microfiber mop. Blot spills promptly, then wipe remaining dirt with the approved cleaner and a well-wrung microfiber cloth or mop. Leave no standing water, dry as directed and avoid oil, wax or unapproved steam.

Three details beneath your feet.

The printed grain is only the visible part of the care decision.

  1. The surface layer

Use tools and products allowed for the finish. Avoid trying to sand or polish away an ordinary mark.

  2. Board joints and bevels

Collect moisture promptly and follow drying instructions. Standing water is not a cleaning step.

  3. Edges and contact points

Check entrance grit, chair pads and the floor tool itself before moving them across the boards.

01 / Before you start

Know what is under the mop.

Wood-look laminate and parquet are different floors. Their deeper care is different too.

Floor identification

Check handover papers, the product name or ask the owner. Do not identify it from the printed grain alone. If it is parquet, use the linked parquet guide instead.

A suitable dry-cleaning tool

Choose a clean soft vacuum head or dry microfiber pad permitted for the surface. Check wheels and pads for grit. A hard edge carrying sand can undo a careful cleaning session.

Approved cleaner and a light wipe

Follow the floor maker's product and dose instructions. A well-wrung microfiber pad should not leave puddles. Do not add soap, polish or wood oil by habit.

A suitable soft vacuum head or dry pad

Collect loose particles first, including edges and safely accessible areas. Keep the tool clean.

02 / The steps

A floor pass with less water.

Move light items safely and give the surface a clean route.

Collect grit before damp wiping, and keep the mop pad clean.
  1. Check the floor and clear the tools

Confirm the laminate product and its care instructions. Look for raised joints, damaged edges or loose boards that need attention rather than more cleaning. Check the vacuum head, wheels and mop pad for trapped grit. Move only light items you can handle safely; avoid dragging furniture across the floor.

  2. Collect the loose dirt

Vacuum with the suitable head or use a dry microfiber mop, beginning where grit has entered. Reach edges and under movable light items without pushing hard at the joints. Clean or change a dirty pad before it redistributes dust. An ordinary dry pass can be enough when the floor has no sticky marks.

  3. Blot spills and wipe local marks

Use a clean absorbent cloth promptly on a spill and check nearby joints. Deal with a small sticky area by the manufacturer's approved spot-cleaning method rather than wetting the whole room. For ink, paint or another unusual stain, read the exact stain instructions before introducing a solvent or stronger product.

  4. Use a lightly damp mop only if needed

Choose the permitted cleaner and dose, with a clean well-wrung microfiber pad. Work in manageable sections without leaving standing water. Follow any extra limits around joints or bevels. Water-resistant branding is not a universal invitation to use more water or a steam cleaner.

  5. Dry and return items gently

Remove remaining moisture by the allowed method and let the floor finish drying before replacing rugs or items. Check beneath a damp entrance mat and move it until both surfaces are dry. Put furniture back without dragging and keep clean protective pads in good condition. The goal is a cared-for floor, not a freshly oiled one.

Laminate does not need a wood-floor makeover.

Soap for a glossy finish

Unsuitable soap-based products can leave a film. Use the floor's approved cleaner and dose.

Oil or wax because it looks like wood

Laminate does not take parquet's oil or wax care. Confirm the material before treating it.

Steam because the box said water-resistant

Check the exact product's instructions. Water resistance does not settle steam compatibility.

03 / The finishing touch

Keep the floor pass small.

Collect entryway grit, blot a spill when it happens and keep the cleaning tool itself clean. A dry pass can do much of the everyday work. The bucket can stay in the cupboard until the remaining dirt actually calls for a compatible damp wipe.

  • Keep grit out of vacuum wheels and mop pads.
  • Use the approved cleaner at its stated dose.
  • Raised joints or damaged boards need floor or building advice.

04 / Questions

Questions

Can I use a steam mop on laminate?

Only if the exact floor's instructions allow the exact method. Do not assume all laminate has the same moisture or heat tolerance. A suitable dry tool and a light permitted wipe are the ordinary starting point.

Why does the floor look dull after washing?

Too much or unsuitable cleaner can leave residue. Martat warns that soap-based products may leave a grey film. Use your floor's approved residue-removal method rather than adding a polish.

Does laminate need oil or wax?

No ordinary laminate-care routine calls for parquet oil or wax. Follow the laminate product's instructions. The linked parquet guide applies to a different flooring material.

Does this cover winter grit or pet hair in full?

This page owns the laminate care method. The linked winter-entryway and pet-hair guides cover collecting those particular kinds of mess without repeating a complete floor-care guide.
