Novah / Keep the floor feeling good

How to clean vinyl plank flooring. Light water, clean steps.

Wood-look vinyl does not need wood oil, wax or a bucket bath. Collect the gritty bits, mix a measured cleaner and make a light pass with a well-wrung mop. Your floor gets clean without becoming a puddle.

Go to the steps

Vacuum first. Two caps in 10 litres. Mop lightly.

For the Pergo vinyl example, vacuum with a clean soft floor head. Mix two caps of Pergo Floor Cleaner in 10 litres of water, using that product's cap. Dip a microfiber mop and wring it thoroughly. Wipe small sections, rinsing the pad often, and remove any standing water immediately. For a small ordinary food stain, Pergo gives a separate local dilution of three teaspoons in 300 ml lukewarm water. Do not use that stronger spot mixture across the whole floor.

Pergo Rigid Click: the bucket route

The vinyl-care sheet gives two caps of Floor Cleaner per 10 litres for residential cleaning, with a wrung microfiber mop. The spray-mop recipe on Pergo's website is a different reservoir-based route. Keep those two dosing systems separate, and leave oil, wax and ordinary dish soap out of this floor mix.

Retailer prices were checked on the dates shown and may change. These are shopping suggestions, not products sold by Novah. Check delivery and local store stock before buying.

01 / Before you start

Make the pad clean before the floor.

A dirty mop can leave a neat pattern of dirt across every board. Start with a clean pad and clear route to the door.

Actual vinyl

Match the floor's product name or handover record to vinyl. Printed wood grain is not proof. If it is laminate or real parquet, use the relevant separate guide.

Grit-free equipment

Check the vacuum wheels, floor head and mop pad for sand. Lift chairs rather than dragging their feet across damp boards.

The correct dose

Use Pergo's matching cap, two caps in 10 litres. You can halve to one cap in five litres. Do not guess a millilitre capacity for a cap you have not measured.

02 / The steps

Clean the room in light passes.

Work from the far side towards the exit. You should not have to walk back across wet boards to reach the bucket.

A well-wrung pad leaves a light damp pass, not a bath.
  1. Collect dry dust and grit.

Vacuum the floor with a clean soft hard-floor head, including edges and safely accessible areas. Use a suitable dry microfiber pad for remaining loose dust. Wipe any fresh spill promptly instead of waiting for a full-room wash.

  2. Mix the routine bucket solution.

Add two caps of Pergo Floor Cleaner to 10 litres of water, or one cap to five litres, using the cap supplied on the named product. Stir gently. Do not add dish soap, polish, disinfectant or a second cleaner.

  3. Dip and wring the pad thoroughly.

Wet the clean microfiber pad in the solution and squeeze out excess water. It should make a light damp pass without dripping or leaving pools. Start on a small area to check the wetness before continuing across the room.

  4. Wipe sections and rinse the mop often.

Move the flat mop in overlapping passes from the far side towards the door. Lift and reposition rather than grinding grit across the joints. Rinse dirty pads, wring again and replace visibly dirty water. Collect stray standing water immediately with a clean dry cloth.

  5. Use the separate spot mix for a food mark.

For the ordinary chocolate, fruit juice, wine or ketchup marks covered by Pergo's guidance, first remove the spill with a damp cloth. If needed, mix three teaspoons of Pergo Floor Cleaner in 300 ml lukewarm water and treat the small mark gently. Wipe away the loosened dirt and residue with a clean damp cloth, then dry. Keep this stronger mix local.

  6. Leave dry, then clean the tools.

Keep feet and chair movement off the damp area until dry. Check the joints and edges for retained water. Wash the mop pad by its care instructions and hang it to dry; pour away dirty water so the next clean starts fresh.

Keep the finish simple.

Wood oil on wood-look vinyl

The print does not turn vinyl into parquet. Oil and wax can leave an unsuitable film and slippery surface.

The stronger spot dose everywhere

Three teaspoons in 300 ml is the local stain route. Routine bucket cleaning uses two caps in 10 litres.

Flooding the joints

Even a water-resistant floor does not need standing water. Wring well and collect any excess rather than waiting for it to evaporate.

03 / The finishing touch

Clean boards, no sticky afterparty.

When dry, the floor should feel normal underfoot without a greasy film. A dull residue can mean an unsuitable product or excess cleaner; more polish is not the next step.

  • Grit is collected before wet wiping.
  • No water is standing at joints or edges.
  • The pad is washed and drying for the next use.

04 / Questions

Questions

Can I use this dose on a different vinyl floor?

The measured recipe is tied to Pergo vinyl and the named Pergo product. Another maker may approve a different cleaner or dose. Keep the method light, but do not present this cap measure as universal.

How often should I wet mop?

Pergo recommends regular dry cleaning, with a damp clean when dirt and use require it. You do not need a wet whole-room wash for a few crumbs. Clean spills locally and keep the pad clean.

Can dish soap replace Floor Cleaner?

That is not the measured route given here. Use the named compatible product and dose instead of adding a foamy or film-forming substitute.

Is vinyl the same as laminate?

No. They can both look like wood, but their construction and deeper care differ. This page owns vinyl care; our laminate and parquet guides cover those materials separately.
