Novah / Keep the coffee in the cup

How to remove stains from a fabric sofa. Blot first, panic later.

A cup tips over. The sofa gets a little too involved in coffee time. Start with a clean white cloth and a gentle blot: you are lifting the spill, not auditioning for the fastest scrubber in Finland.

Go to the steps

Lift the spill. Test. Treat lightly. Remove the cleaner.

Blot fresh liquid with a clean white absorbent cloth, working from the outside towards the centre. On water-cleanable colourfast fabric, test a tiny amount of SINI Tahrageeli in a hidden area and let the test dry. Apply lightly to the stain, work gently with the included damp sponge and wipe out the gel with a clean damp cloth. Let the area dry fully. A removable IKEA KLIPPAN Vissle cover has a separate machine-wash route at a maximum of 40°C.

The job, at a glance

Two fabric routes, one calm first move

For a fresh food or drink spill on fabric that permits water-based cleaning. This is stain removal, not pet-hair collection, full sofa shampooing, leather care or dry-clean-only upholstery.

Fixed, water-cleanable upholstery

Keep the cushion filling as dry as possible. Blot the spill, test and dry a hidden patch, then work a small amount of gel into the surface with the damp supplied sponge. Wipe with fresh damp cloth faces until residue is gone. Stop if colour transfers or the surface changes.

IKEA KLIPPAN with the Vissle grey cover

This named removable cover allows a normal machine wash at up to 40°C. Remove the cover, treat the spot and wash it with similar colours. Do not bleach or tumble dry; air dry fully before refitting. Do not assume every KLIPPAN fabric or any fixed sofa cover shares that limit.

Buy only what is missing

One targeted gel. Keep the water light.

SINI Tahrageeli includes its own sponge. Use a thin local application and remove the gel completely. Do not flood a fixed cushion or leave soap drying inside it.

01 / Before you start

Give the fabric a small test before the big gesture.

A hidden dry test prevents a small coffee mark becoming a large colour mark.

Match the cleaning route

Use water-based spot cleaning only on fabric that permits it. A dry-clean-only cover, leather, suede or water-sensitive fabric does not belong in this gel-and-water routine.

White cloths, fresh faces

White cloth shows colour transfer. Fold it into sections and switch faces as it picks up the spill; keep a separate cloth for removing cleaner.

Dry test, not just wet test

Test under a cushion or at a hidden seam. Let the test dry and check for colour change, rings and texture changes before treating the visible seat.

02 / The steps

A small spill gets a small treatment.

The gel label does not prescribe a five- or ten-minute soak. Do not invent one; apply, gently work and remove.

Press and lift. Keep the cushion filling out of the wash.
  1. Lift solids and blot liquid.

Use a spoon to lift food from the surface without smearing. Press a dry white cloth onto liquid and lift it straight up. Work from the outside of the patch inwards. Repeat with clean cloth faces until they pick up little liquid.

  2. Test the gel in a hidden patch.

On suitable water-cleanable fabric, apply a tiny amount of gel and work it gently with the damp sponge. Wipe it away with a clean water-dampened cloth. Let the patch dry. Stop if colour transfers, a ring appears or the texture changes.

  3. Use a thin local application.

Put a small amount of SINI Tahrageeli on the stain. Dampen the included sponge, squeeze it out and work the gel gently into the affected surface. Keep the treatment limited to the spot. No soaking the cushion, stiff brush or vigorous scrubbing.

  4. Remove gel with fresh damp cloths.

Dampen a clean white cloth in plain water and wring it well. Press and lift to collect loosened dirt and cleaner. Repeat with fresh sections, rinsing the cloth between passes. Keep going until the gel is removed without saturating the fabric or filling.

  5. Use the cover wash only when it is allowed.

For the named removable KLIPPAN Vissle grey cover, remove the cover and machine-wash on a normal programme at no more than 40°C with suitable colour-laundry detergent. Wash similar colours together. Do not machine-wash cushion filling or a fixed cover.

  6. Dry fully before judging or sitting.

Blot remaining moisture with a dry white towel. Ventilate the room and let fixed upholstery air dry without a hairdryer or heater pressed against it. Keep the seat unused while damp. Inspect after drying; repeat a gentle local treatment only if the first test and fabric remain sound.

The stain is small. Keep the response small too.

Scrubbing outwards

That spreads the spill and can roughen the fabric. Lift from the edges towards the centre.

A universal stain cocktail

Do not mix vinegar, baking soda, bleach and gel. Start with one compatible product and remove it properly.

Hiding wetness with cushions

Let the cleaned fabric dry in the open. Damp filling can hold moisture much longer than the surface suggests.

03 / The finishing touch

Let the sofa be a sofa again.

A damp patch can look darker before it dries. Check the dry fabric in daylight before deciding it needs more product. Some old or dye-based stains need textile cleaning expertise rather than repeated home treatment.

  • The cleaner has been removed, not left to dry in place.
  • The fabric is dry with no colour transfer or changed texture.
  • The seat can be used once both surface and filling are dry.

04 / Questions

Questions

How long should Tahrageeli stay on the stain?

SINI's instructions give no fixed soaking time. Apply the gel, work it with a damp sponge or cloth and rinse, damp-wipe or wash it out. Do not leave it overnight or invent a timed soak.

Can I machine-wash any removable cover at 40°C?

No. The 40°C maximum here is the named KLIPPAN Vissle grey cover's instruction. Other fabrics can have different limits, including no machine wash. Match the actual cover first.

What if a ring appears after drying?

Stop adding product. A ring can come from residue, moved soil or uneven wetting. If the fabric remains suitable and colourfast, remove remaining residue gently; persistent rings or texture changes need specialist textile advice.

Does the pet-hair guide do the same job?

No. That guide removes loose fur with dry tools. This one handles a food or drink stain. Remove loose hair before spot work, but do not soak the sofa to collect it.
