Novah / A little spill control
How to remove stains from a rug. Catch the spill, save the afternoon.
The mug took a shortcut to the floor. Start by lifting the spill before it spreads through the rug and onto the boards underneath. Then choose a small spot treatment or the washable-rug route, rather than soaking the whole room.
Go to the steps
Blot the spill and protect the floor underneath.
Lift solids, press liquid into clean white cloths and work from the edge inward. Move the affected rug area off a vulnerable floor and put a dry towel underneath. On suitable water-cleanable colourfast fibres, test SINI Tahrageeli, apply a thin local amount and wipe it out with fresh damp cloths. A machine-washable cotton TIPHEDE rug can instead be washed at a maximum of 40°C and line dried, if it fits the machine safely.
The job, at a glance
The stain, the backing and the floor
For an ordinary food or drink spill on a water-cleanable rug. The worked washable example is IKEA TIPHEDE cotton. Antique rugs, unstable dyes, delicate fibres and rugs with unsuitable backing need a different route.
- Blotting direction
- Edges → centreKeep the wet patch from getting larger.
- SINI gel treatment
- No set soakApply, gently work and remove; no label-mandated waiting time.
- TIPHEDE machine wash
- 40°C maxThis cotton rug's care limit, not a rule for all rugs.
A water-cleanable rug: treat the fibres, not the floor
Lift the affected area away from wood or laminate, blot first and use the gel only on a colourfast surface that tolerates water. Remove it with a well-wrung white cloth. Dry the top and underside before laying the rug back down.
IKEA TIPHEDE 155 × 220 cm: washable cotton
The named black/natural TIPHEDE is 100% cotton and permits a normal wash at up to 40°C, with no bleach and line drying. Its dry rug weight is about 2.93 kg, and wet cotton is much heavier. Use a machine that can handle the rug without forcing or overloading it; do not guess from the drum opening alone.
Buy only what is missing
A small stain kit, with the sponge included.
SINI Tahrageeli is a local treatment, not a reason to soak the backing. Get clean white cloths from home and keep the underside drying too.
A practical choice

A thin local application after testing and drying a hidden patch.
Optional
LV Color laundry liquid

01 / Before you start
Look under the stain as well as at it.
The backing can hold moisture even when the visible fibres start to feel dry.
A suitable material
Use the water route only on colourfast fibres and a backing that tolerate wet spot cleaning. Do not treat every wool, silk, viscose or antique rug as washable cotton.
Floor protection
Lift the wet area off wood, laminate or other water-sensitive flooring. Use an absorbent towel under it and replace the towel as it becomes damp.
A dry colour test
Test at a concealed edge using a white cloth. Remove the product and let the test dry before committing to the visible stain. Stop if dye transfers or fibres change.
02 / The steps
From spill to a dry, usable rug.
A fresh spill gets blotting first. Product comes later, in the smallest suitable amount.

Lift food and blot the liquid.
Pick up solids with a spoon from the outside inward. Press a dry white cloth down and lift it straight up to collect liquid. Use fresh faces and repeat. Do not rub the stain across the pile or brush it deeper into the backing.
Move the damp area off the floor.
Lift or move the rug carefully and place a dry absorbent towel beneath the affected area. If you cannot protect the floor without moving a heavy piece of furniture, stop the wet work rather than letting moisture sit on the boards.
Test the cleaner and allow the test to dry.
On an allowed water-cleanable rug, apply a tiny amount of SINI Tahrageeli at a concealed edge. Gently work with its damp supplied sponge, wipe out with a clean damp cloth and let dry. Check dye transfer, texture and any ring.

Treat the small stain and remove the gel.
Apply a thin amount locally, work gently with the damp sponge and collect loosened dirt with a well-wrung clean white cloth. Rinse the cloth between passes and keep changing faces until the product is removed. Do not leave gel to dry or invent an overnight soak.

Use a full wash only for a washable rug.
For the named TIPHEDE cotton rug, a normal machine wash up to 40°C is allowed. Use a suitable detergent and no bleach. Only use a washer that accepts the rug within its textile and load limits without forcing it in. A rug that exceeds the machine's capacity needs another washing arrangement.

Dry both faces before returning it.
Blot remaining moisture with a dry towel. Line dry TIPHEDE and ventilate a spot-cleaned rug so air reaches its underside. Replace a damp towel beneath it. Keep it off the floor and avoid walking on the patch until top and backing are fully dry.
Leave the dramatic remedies out.
Boiling water on every spill
A hot soak can be wrong for the fibre, dye or stain. This local route uses a damp cloth and a compatible cleaner.
Wet backing on laminate
A dry-looking top does not prove the underside is dry. Keep the rug lifted until both faces are ready.
A too-small washing machine
A flexible rug that can be pushed through the door can still overload the drum when wet. The machine's permitted load matters.
03 / The finishing touch
The rug stays. The spill gets the exit.
Judge the result only after full drying. If colour moves, the backing deforms or a stubborn ring remains, stop repeating home treatments and use appropriate textile-cleaning help.
- The gel is wiped or washed out.
- The top, backing and floor underneath are dry.
- The rug can return flat to its usual position and underlay.
04 / Questions
Questions
How long does the stain gel need?
SINI gives no fixed contact time. Work the gel with a damp sponge or cloth and remove it by rinsing, damp wiping or a permitted wash. Do not add a made-up long soak.
Guidance from: SINI · Tahrageeli instructions (opens in a new tab)
Can every cotton rug go in a machine?
No. The named TIPHEDE example allows it, but construction, backing, size and the washer's load limits still matter. A large rug can be too heavy or bulky for a domestic machine even if its fibres are washable.

Will this remove an old stain completely?
There is no honest universal guarantee. Age, dye, fibre and earlier products affect the result. Use the compatible small treatment, let dry and stop if the material changes.
What about loose pet hair?
Collect hair with the dry method in our separate pet-hair guide before stain work. This page owns spills and stains, not routine fur removal or a whole-room cleaning schedule.
