Novah / A small reset after dinner

How to clean an induction hob, without chasing the shine.

The hob looks like one smooth surface. Its care instructions can be a little more specific. Glossy glass, matt glass and special coatings may need different products. Start with the surface you have, then make the ordinary after-dinner wipe an easy habit.

What kind of glass do you have?

For an ordinary clean: cool, wipe, remove residue, dry.

Switch off the hob and let it cool for routine cleaning. Remove loose crumbs gently, use the cleaner approved for the exact surface and wipe off residue as directed. Finish with a clean soft drying cloth. Sugar or melted plastic on a hot surface needs the maker's urgent spill procedure, not this ordinary cool-surface sequence.

↘

The glass is only part of the story.

Check the areas where a product or tool will actually touch.

  1. Cooking zones

An ordinary clean starts after cooling. Follow the separate urgent-spill procedure for hot sugar or melted plastic.

  2. Surface finish

Identify the glass or coating before choosing a cleaner or scraper.

  3. Controls and edges

Wipe gently and keep liquid out of joints and openings. Do not flood the top.

01 / Before you start

Choose for the finish.

A smooth black top is not proof that every glass cleaner will suit it.

The exact surface instructions

Find the model and check whether it has glossy, matt or specially coated glass. A coating's care instructions take priority over a general ceramic-hob tip.

Soft, clean cloths

Remove grit from the cloth before wiping. Use a separate clean cloth to finish, so you do not polish a cleaner film into the surface. Avoid abrasive pads unless expressly permitted.

An approved hob cleaner

Choose the product and dose specified for the finish. Keep cleaner off areas the instructions exclude. A scraper is an optional model-specific tool, not the default first step.

What kind of glass do you have?

Look at the product documents rather than identifying a coating from its shine.

A useful starting point

The specified glass-hob cleaner

Use a clean soft cloth and remove residue fully. A compatible scraper may be allowed for a particular mark.

Check before trying

02 / The steps

A clear route across a cool surface.

These steps are for an ordinary clean, not a hot-spill emergency.

A clean finishing cloth helps remove residue without adding more product.
  1. Switch off and allow routine cleaning to wait

Turn off the cooking zones and use the hob's residual-heat information. Let the surface cool enough for the ordinary cleaning method. If hot sugar or plastic has melted onto it, stop and follow the exact urgent-removal instructions, with the stated burn precautions. Do not pour cold water over hot glass.

  2. Lift loose crumbs before wiping

Remove grit and loose food with a suitable soft tool. Check the underside of pots and wipe nearby worktop crumbs so they do not end up back on the hob. A cloth carrying sandy particles can leave its own marks. Use gentle pressure rather than scrubbing the first dry pass.

  3. Apply the compatible cleaner

Use the approved product and amount on the cooled surface by the method in the instructions. Work on a manageable area. Remove an ordinary grease mark with the prescribed cloth or sponge, and keep cleaner away from joints or controls where the manual says so. Matt or coated glass may need a different approach.

  4. Treat stubborn residue by the specific method

If a mark stays, identify what it is and read the manufacturer's stain or residue guidance. Use a glass-hob scraper only when your surface allows it, with the specified blade and technique. A kitchen knife is not a substitute. Leave cracks, chips or a doubtful coating for appliance advice rather than a harder scrape.

  5. Remove the film and dry

Wipe off cleaner residue as directed and finish with a clean soft cloth. Check edges and the control area without flooding them. A grey film can be leftover product, while a permanent scratch needs a different decision. Restore normal use only when the surface is dry and ready according to the manual.

More force is rarely the missing step.

A knife for a stubborn spot

Use only a permitted glass-hob tool and technique. An improvised blade can damage the surface.

One product for every finish

A glossy surface and a special matt coating may have different care rules.

A wet top left to air-dry

Remove the cleaning residue and finish as the instructions describe. Extra product can leave a fresh film.

03 / The finishing touch

Keep the next dinner easy to tidy.

Deal with ordinary cooking residue once the hob is cool, and keep pot bases clean. A small regular wipe is simpler than an occasional battle with a thick layer. The surface does not need to win a mirror competition to be well cared for.

  • Keep a clean soft finishing cloth nearby.
  • Check urgent spill instructions before you ever need them.
  • Stop using a cracked or damaged surface and seek appliance advice.

04 / Questions

Questions

Can I use a scraper on an induction hob?

Only if the instructions for the exact surface permit one. Check the blade and technique. Special matt or coated glass may have its own rules.

Why does the glass look streaky after cleaning?

Check for cleaner residue, a dirty cloth or an unsuitable product. Follow the allowed residue-removal method and use a separate clean cloth to finish. Persistent marks may need manufacturer advice.

Is this also an oven-cleaning guide?

No. The hob's surface and the oven's interior use different methods. The linked oven guide covers its own appliance and finish checks.

What should I do with sugar on a hot hob?

Use the manufacturer's urgent spill instructions immediately, including its burn precautions. Do not simply wait for a routine wipe if the instructions require prompt removal. Keep the relevant manual accessible.
