Novah / A little order behind the door
How to clean a fridge, shelf by shelf.
Somewhere behind the yoghurt is a jar you no longer recognise. It happens. Fridge cleaning is easier when you give the food a cool place to wait, remove what the manual allows and work from the top shelf down. No mystery mixture required.
Go to the steps
Food out. Shelves washed. Everything dry.
Plan a short cleaning session with chilled storage ready. Follow the fridge's instructions for switching it off, removing shelves and choosing a cleaner. Wipe the interior, door compartments and seals, remove residue and dry. Restart and return food only when the appliance is ready to keep it at the required storage temperature.

Three places worth a closer look.
A simple route through the accessible interior. Your model may arrange these parts differently.
Shelves and drawers
Lift out only parts designed to be removable. Let cold glass adjust before washing it in warmer water.
Door compartments and seals
Wipe spills and crumbs gently, including accessible folds. Keep seals attached.
Interior and drainage
Work from top to bottom. Clean a visible drain opening only by the method in the appliance manual.
01 / Before you start
Make room before you make suds.
A little preparation keeps the kitchen from becoming a second fridge.
Cool temporary storage
Prepare a working second fridge or suitable insulated cool box with cold packs. Keep perishable food cold and follow its storage instructions. A kitchen counter is a sorting space, not refrigerated storage.
Soft cloths and a mild cleaner
Choose a cleaner permitted by the appliance manual. A soft cloth, gentle brush where allowed and a separate drying cloth are usually enough for ordinary spills. Avoid strong smells and abrasive pads.
The appliance instructions
Check how shelves and drawers release. Find the cleaning and restart instructions, including any drain opening. An integrated fridge should stay in place; this guide does not involve dismantling the appliance.
02 / The steps
Give each shelf its own moment.
Set out the clean parts as you go, so you can put everything back without a puzzle.

Protect the food and switch off as directed
Read the cleaning instructions before touching controls. Move perishables into chilled temporary storage, check containers for spills and discard food only according to its condition and safety guidance. Keep the time outside refrigerated storage as short as possible. If one control also switches off a connected freezer, plan for that compartment too.

Take out the removable parts
Remove shelves, door trays and drawers only as the manual describes. Support glass with both hands and give cold parts time to adjust before washing; sudden temperature changes can damage them. Keep clips and trim in place unless their removal is specifically part of routine cleaning.
Wash shelves and drawers gently
Use the maker's approved method and cleaner. Wash by hand unless the manual explicitly allows the dishwasher. Clean corners with a suitable soft tool, rinse off the cleaner and dry. Inspect a cracked drawer or damaged shelf rather than trying to scrub the damage away.

Wipe the inside and the door
Start at the top with a clean damp cloth, then work down the back, sides and bottom. Wipe door trays and the accessible seal folds. Remove cleaner residue as directed. Do not pour water into the fridge, pry off seals or push an improvised tool into a drain you cannot identify.

Dry, rebuild and cool
Dry the interior and all removable parts before refitting them. Restart according to the manual and confirm that the fridge is back at a suitable food-storage temperature before returning perishables. Leave room for the appliance's required airflow and place spill-prone containers where you can see them.

The shortcuts that make extra work.
Hot water on cold glass
Let glass shelves adjust and follow their washing instructions. A sudden temperature change is an avoidable risk.
More scent, less freshness
A strongly fragranced cleaner can leave an unwelcome smell around food. Use the appliance's approved product and remove residue.
Food waiting on the worktop
Keep perishables in suitable chilled storage. Finish the clean without turning a cool-storage task into a long kitchen project.
03 / The finishing touch
Keep the next clean smaller.
Deal with a small spill when you notice it and check containers before they go back. A tray under a leaky jar can save you another shelf-washing session. The fridge can be organised without looking like a supermarket display.
- Keep perishable food cold throughout the job.
- Return dry parts to their correct positions.
- If the appliance stays warm, leaks or smells after cleaning, arrange advice or service.
04 / Questions
Questions
Can I put fridge shelves in the dishwasher?
Only if your appliance's instructions allow it for those exact parts. Glass, plastic, clips and decorative trims may have different limits. Hand washing is the sensible starting point when you do not know.
How often should I clean the fridge?
Check its contents and deal with spills regularly. Plan a fuller clean when residue has built up, something has leaked or the manufacturer's schedule calls for it. You do not need to empty the whole fridge for one fresh spill.

Will cleaning remove every fridge smell?
It can remove spilled food and residue, but a persistent smell may come from a drainage issue, damaged parts or food that needs attention. Check the appliance instructions and ask for service when the cause is unclear.
Does this guide also cover freezer defrosting?
That needs a different plan for frozen food, ice and meltwater. Use the linked freezer guide rather than following the fridge steps for an iced-up freezer.
