Novah / A better morning brew

How to descale a coffee maker. Let the coffee taste like coffee.

Slower brewing and chalky deposits are not a new coffee feature. They are a good reason to tackle limescale. Here is a measured routine for a filter brewer, with the product, the dose and the rinses all in one place.

Go to the steps
Filter coffee maker, measuring jug and descaling supplies on a kitchen counter

One descaling run. At least two clean-water runs.

For the worked Wilfa Performance example, mix 50 ml Wilfa Brewfresh Universal Descaler WICD-250 with 500 ml water. Put the solution in the reservoir and run the brewer with its carafe and empty filter holder in place. Discard the cooled solution, rinse the tank, then run at least two full tanks of clean water. Do not put coffee, dish soap or a coffee-oil cleaner in the descaling run.

The job, at a glance

Worked example: Wilfa Performance WSPL-3B / CM7T-125. This page targets filter-coffee descaling, not espresso-machine programmes, grinder cleaning or coffee-oil removal.

Wilfa Performance: match the flow setting to the batch

WSPL-3B and CM7T-125 are the same brewer family. Fit its empty holder and carafe, and set the holder's flow control for the water amount rather than leaving the drip stop closed. Keep the 1.25 litre maximum in mind for the fresh-water rinses. Do not add a separate soaking pause to this run.

Buy only what is missing

Buy the descaler, keep your measuring jug.

Pick WICD-250, labelled Universal Descaler. Wilfa also sells a cleaner for coffee residue; that is a different job and a different bottle. The full bottle price below is not the cost of one 50 ml dose.

  1. A practical choice

01 / Before you start

Descaling and cleaning are two jobs.

Descaler removes mineral deposits. A coffee-residue cleaner tackles oils. A nice-smelling carafe does not tell you the internal water path is descaled.

The exact bottle

Use Brewfresh Universal Descaler WICD-250 for this recipe. Do not copy its dilution onto a tablet, another acid powder or an espresso-machine cleaning product.

A cold, empty brewer

Let it cool and remove used grounds and paper. Position it on a stable clear counter with the carafe correctly seated.

A separate water jug

Measure the water in a clean jug. Filling the reservoir from a dirty coffee carafe carries oils into the water system.

02 / The steps

Measure. Run. Rinse twice.

Have the clean water ready before starting. The rinse runs are part of the task, not an optional bonus.

Clear measuring jug beside an empty filter-coffee carafe
Measure the product and water separately. Rinsing gets its own two full runs.
  1. Empty and prepare the brewer.

Remove yesterday's grounds and filter paper. Rinse the filter holder and carafe. Refit them empty and put the carafe under the outlet. Check the flow control is open for the planned batch and the reservoir is empty.

  2. Measure 50 ml descaler and 500 ml water.

Measure the two separately in a clean jug and mix. Pour the solution into the water reservoir without exceeding its maximum. Avoid splashing skin and eyes, and keep the product out of children's reach. Do not combine it with another cleaner.

  3. Run the complete descaling batch.

Start the brewer and let the solution flow through into the carafe. Stay nearby and keep the holder and carafe in place. Do not use coffee grounds and do not interrupt the run to invent an extra soak. Switch off when the run finishes.

  4. Let the solution cool, then discard.

The collected liquid can be hot. Wait until the carafe can be handled safely, empty it carefully and rinse it. Rinse the removable water tank with clean water too. Descaling liquid is not a drink, even if it comes from a coffee machine.

  5. Run the first full tank of clean water.

Fill the reservoir with fresh water to the model's full-tank mark, without exceeding 1.25 litres for Performance. Refit the empty holder and clean carafe, open flow control and run the full batch. Switch off, let the water cool enough to handle and empty the carafe.

  6. Run a second full tank and finish dry.

Repeat the entire clean-water run with fresh water. Rinse the carafe and holder, unplug the cooled brewer and wipe splashes with a damp cloth. If residue remains, continue fresh-water rinsing before making coffee. Never use taste-testing as the first check for chemical residue.

Keep these out of the reservoir.

Hand dish soap

It is for loose dishes, not the brewer's internal water path. A reservoir full of foam makes a small job much less small.

A cleaner mistaken for a descaler

The word cleaning is not enough. Read the product name: this recipe uses Universal Descaler WICD-250.

A shortcut rinse

A quick splash into the tank does not flush the internal system. Brew at least two full clean-water tanks.

03 / The finishing touch

Now the coffee gets its turn.

A completed job has an emptied tank, a clean carafe and the descaling solution fully rinsed out. Follow Wilfa's descaling interval of at least every three months, adjusting for water hardness and use.

  • The two full fresh-water rinses are complete.
  • Carafe and holder are clean and free of residue.
  • Save the product name and dose for the next descale.

04 / Questions

Questions

Can I use the same dose for another descaler?

No. The 50 ml plus 500 ml recipe is for Wilfa Brewfresh WICD-250. Powders, tablets and other liquids have different strengths. Use their own stated recipe rather than converting by eye.

Does this cover espresso machines?

No. Espresso machines can have internal filters, boilers and dedicated descaling programmes. This guide is for a filter brewer; sending its solution through an espresso machine without the correct procedure would be a different task.

How often should Performance be descaled?

Wilfa's current support guidance says at least every three months. Harder water and heavy use may mean more frequent care. If flow does not improve after the correct descale and rinses, ask for service rather than adding a stronger dose.

Will descaling remove coffee oils?

Not as the main job. Wash the loose carafe and holder separately and use a suitable coffee-residue cleaner when needed. Mineral deposits and coffee oils need different products; do not mix those products in one run.
