Quick answer
Plan one simple thing to serve, ask about dietary needs, measure the coffee and clear a place to sit. Put cold additions out in small amounts when the guests arrive.
Make room for the people first
Clear a place to sit, choose one simple thing to serve and ask whether anyone needs a particular food or drink. A coffee visit can be coffee, a bun and a good conversation.
Count everyone, including yourself. For four people, prepare four cups, four plates if the food needs them and enough chairs. Check whether tea, decaf or a suitable milk alternative would help.
Pick a setup you can finish before the doorbell. The guests came to see you; the cake does not need a supporting cast.
Measure the coffee before you start
For an ordinary multi-cup filter brewer, Moccamaster's starting ratio (Opens in a new tab) is 60 g of filter-ground coffee per litre of water.
| Water | Coffee at that ratio |
|---|---|
| 500 ml | 30 g |
| 750 ml | 45 g |
| 1 litre | 60 g |
For four people, 750 ml gives four modest first servings. Use one litre if you want larger cups. Brew another batch if people want more, rather than keeping a huge pot waiting throughout the visit.
Put fresh cold water in the brewer, fit the correct filter paper, add the weighed filter-ground coffee and start brewing close to arrival. Choose a volume within your multi-cup filter brewer's capacity.

Choose one familiar product and one easy snack
Paulig Juhla Mokka filter-ground coffee, 500 g (Opens in a new tab) is a real supermarket option. Choose the package marked suodatinjauhatus for a filter brewer. The serving plan above uses Moccamaster's 60 g-per-litre starting ratio; you can adjust subsequent pots to taste.
One bun per person, sliced cake or a simple savoury option can be enough. Keep the shopping list short:
- The coffee or tea you actually need.
- Milk or a suitable alternative.
- One chosen snack in enough portions.
- Any missing filter papers.
Prisma Tripla in Pasila (Opens in a new tab) is at Firdonkatu 2b, Helsinki. Select the shop in S-kaupat to see its range for your list. Use the trip for what is missing rather than buying a whole new serving set.
Set the table so serving is easy
Put plates and food first, drinks last, with somewhere to put a plate while pouring. Martat's serving guidance (Opens in a new tab) describes that order and the importance of landing space.
For a small table, place the coffee and food on the kitchen counter and leave the table for sitting. Slice a cake before people arrive. Give a milk jug its own stable place, away from a laptop or a stack of papers.
A mix of mugs is perfectly usable. Put out the number you need and keep a spare nearby. The table does not need to match in order to work.
Handle dietary needs before shopping
Ask about allergies or other dietary needs when arranging the visit. Choose food that actually fits the answer. Keep the original ingredient information available, and use separate clean serving tools when that is needed.
For cold milk and other perishable additions, bring out a small amount when guests arrive and replenish as needed. Ruokavirasto's home-food guidance (Opens in a new tab) recommends small serving batches and keeping cold food cold. A long-warm jug should not be poured back into the fresh milk.
Give the home a useful amount of preparation
Clear the table, make a place for coats and check that the bathroom is ready to use. Put away personal papers and the work laptop. Our pack-away workspace plan makes that easier when the dining table is also a desk.
If regular cleaning is the part you want help with, see Novah home cleaning in Espoo. That can be one part of the household routine, while choosing food and welcoming friends stay with you.
Afterwards, put suitable leftover food away promptly using the fridge routine, gather the cups and enjoy having had the visit. You do not need to grade your hosting.
