Stop forgetting food at the back of the fridge

Make the food you already own easier to see and use. A practical fridge routine for leftovers, shopping lists and Finnish date labels.

Quick answer

Give food that needs using a visible front-of-shelf place, date your leftovers and plan the next meal around it. Keep the system small enough to repeat before shopping.

Give tomorrow's food a visible place

The half cucumber behind three jars has had a quiet week. Bring usable food that needs eating soon to one visible part of the fridge and decide its next meal before buying more.

Use a small front-of-shelf tray or a clearly marked shelf area. Put cooled leftovers and opened ingredients there, while keeping raw meat and fish separately contained so they cannot drip onto ready-to-eat food. Leave gaps for air to circulate.

Keep each food in the cold conditions it needs. Ruokavirasto's storage advice (Opens in a new tab) supports buying what you use and using older purchases first.

Make the next meal before making the list

Open the fridge before opening the shopping app. Choose one meal that uses something already waiting: leftover cooked vegetables with a fresh meal, an opened ingredient in tomorrow's cooking, or bread you can use while it is still good.

Write what that meal is missing on the list. Then add genuinely needed staples. It is easier to buy one missing ingredient than to hope several unrelated purchases somehow become dinner.

For a shared household, keep one list that everyone can edit. Add an item when it runs out and cross it off when someone buys it. The person noticing the empty milk carton is doing part of the household task, too.

Cool leftovers promptly and label them

Save untouched cooking leftovers before a meal turns into a long evening at the table. Divide hot food into smaller containers, or stand the cooking pot in cold water to speed cooling, then refrigerate promptly. Do not put a large hot pot in the fridge or leave it on the worktop for hours. These methods come from Ruokavirasto's guidance for home food storage (Opens in a new tab).

Mark the contents and cooking date on the container. Plan to use it soon; the most perishable ingredient sets the dish's storage life. If a prepared dish has spent a long time warming on a serving table, putting it back in the fridge does not undo that time.

Use a fridge thermometer to check the actual shelf temperature after the door has stayed closed overnight. Ruokavirasto describes a general chilled range of +2 to +6 °C (Opens in a new tab); some foods need colder storage. Keep the original product's temperature and opened-storage information with it when that affects your plan.

Read the two Finnish date labels differently

LabelWhat to do
Parasta ennen / best beforeA quality date. Correctly stored food may remain usable afterwards; assess its condition.
Viimeinen käyttöpäivä / use byUse by the stated date. Do not use it after that date because it still smells normal.

Ruokavirasto explains the distinction (Opens in a new tab). Opening a package also matters: an unopened date does not give an opened product an unlimited life. Keep the opening instructions visible and add the opening date where helpful.

Discard spoiled food and use the routine to catch suitable food while it is still good.

Choose containers that fit your actual meals

The IKEA 365+ rectangular one-litre glass container (Opens in a new tab) is one real option for leftovers. The linked listing is the container; add a compatible lid to your shopping plan.

A shallow food-safe container you already own may do the job. Use smaller portions when that makes cooling and next-day use easier. A large collection of matching boxes is optional; being able to see what is inside matters more.

If grime is hiding what you have, give the empty shelves a separate session using our fridge-cleaning guide. This routine is about using the food, not scrubbing the appliance.

Repeat one small check before the next shop

Look at the use-first area, choose the next meal and update the list. Remove anything no longer suitable to eat. Put newly bought versions behind older suitable ones, without covering the temperature information you need.

For a Helsinki shopping option, Prisma Tripla in Pasila (Opens in a new tab) is at Firdonkatu 2b. Select the store to see its range for the ingredients on your list.

If supplies for an unexpected interruption are your next concern, build a small-apartment kotivara around foods you already use. Both routines work better when the cupboard is familiar.
