Quick answer
Check your landlord's instructions first. Clean cupboards and appliances as you empty them, then finish the bathroom, surfaces and floors after moving your belongings out. Include any balcony, sauna and storage spaces required by your instructions.
Start with your own handover instructions
This checklist helps you organise a move-out clean in Helsinki, Espoo or Vantaa. It does not replace the instructions for your tenancy or the care instructions for your home's materials.
Find the cleaning instructions in your landlord's moving-out information. Confirm the handover and key-return deadline before planning the work. If you received an inspection report, add its specific cleaning requests to your list.
Local providers publish useful examples: Heka's moving checklist (Opens in a new tab), Espoon Asunnot's moving-out instructions (Opens in a new tab) and HOAS's cleaning checklist (Opens in a new tab). Requirements and deadlines belong to each provider; they are not one rule for every Finnish rental home.
Prepare before moving day
- Empty and wipe cupboards as you pack. Keep a small cleaning kit aside so it does not leave with the moving boxes.
- Check the freezer's defrosting instructions early. Plan for the time and water collection the appliance needs.
- Do larger tasks ahead where practical, then check those areas again before handover. Leave the final floors until most belongings are out.
- Read product labels and appliance manuals. Choose a cleaning method that suits the surface; do not assume that the same cleaner works on wood, stone, glass and painted walls.
- Do not mix cleaning products. Follow label instructions for dosage and protection. Tukes explains detergent warning labels (Opens in a new tab); the Allergy, Skin and Asthma Federation explains why products should not be mixed (Opens in a new tab).
If you cannot identify a material or safely reach an area, ask the landlord or maintenance company what to do. Cleaning should not turn into an improvised repair.

Room-by-room checklist
Kitchen
Work through storage and appliances before finishing the floor. Heka and HOAS include oven and fridge interiors and the extractor grease filter in their tenant checklists. These tasks are not automatically included in a purchased cleaning service.
Bathroom and WC
Finish fixtures and storage before the floor. Use products approved for the actual surface, including taps, shower glass and any coated fittings.
A leak, damaged surface or persistent unusual staining needs a report to the landlord or maintenance company. Do not cover a defect with cleaning or treat cleaning as proof that the underlying problem is fixed.
Living rooms, bedrooms and hallway
Check the entrance again after the final boxes leave. Do not assume a floor cleaned before the move is still ready for handover.
Windows and ventilation
Check what your landlord requires and what is safe in the weather. Heka includes inside windows and outside surfaces when weather permits. HOAS advises cleaning only the inside in freezing weather. Neither example means you should attempt unsafe exterior work.
Sauna, balcony and storage
Include these spaces if they belong to your tenancy and your handover instructions cover them.
Before returning the keys
Walk through the emptied home with your own instructions in hand. Check cupboards, appliances, bathroom, floors and any additional spaces. Review inspection requests individually rather than assuming that a general checklist covers them.
Report damage or leaks, confirm any unresolved instruction with the landlord, and return keys as instructed. Keep relevant handover records and photos for your own reference; photographs do not replace cleaning or agreed handover arrangements.
Cleaning does not guarantee that a rental deposit will be returned. KKV's deposit guidance (Opens in a new tab) distinguishes cleaning shortcomings and damage from normal wear. Deposit questions also depend on other obligations and the circumstances of the tenancy.
If you book Novah
Use this checklist to compare your landlord's requirements with your booking. A tenant's handover checklist and a company's standard service scope are different things.
Novah's standard move-out clean includes cupboard cleaning, appliance exteriors and bathroom cleaning. Oven interior cleaning, fridge/freezer interiors, windows, sauna and balcony are add-ons. The extractor grease filter, moving heavy appliances and unblocking pipes are outside the standard scope. Fridge/freezer interior cleaning requires the appliance to be emptied and defrosted beforehand.
Read the current service details for Helsinki, Espoo or Vantaa. If an instruction is unclear or requires work outside your booking, contact Novah before the visit.
The right finish is a clean home handed over according to your own instructions, with service inclusions and any remaining tasks clear beforehand.
